This study involved examining the time management skills of eight at-risk African American college students who were struggling academically. The main methodology used in the study was phenomenology to assess the meanings participants assigned to their lived experiences. Qualitative and quantitative data showed that how participants perceived time in order to make time management decisions was greatly influenced by their past experiences. Overall, six major findings derived from 15 patterns of behaviors filtered through the interpreted experiences of the eight participants. Based on all the data analyzed, it can be concluded that time management plays a profound role in the academic performances and eventual success of at-risk African American students. Many participants entered the university with different values, expectations, and often poor academic preparation. Based on these findings, more effort must be undertaken by these individuals if they are to overcome the barriers of poor preparation. Extra effort is important, yet participants struggle to integrate new approaches to learning with regard to planning and executing their plans. The challenge appears to be that progress requires new behaviors they have not fully embraced or that may require more practice. This study helps university faculty and staff better understand, communicate with, and serve at-risk African American students.
